Does God even exist?

Before we can get into the finer points of Christianity, we have to ask ourselves, "Why do we think God exists?" After all, if there's not evidence that there's even a God, who cares about all the other stuff? There are three basic arguments when it comes to the questions of the existence of God.

The Bible says there's a God. In fact, it just assumes that everyone believes there is a God. The question of the existence of God is irrelevant from the Biblical perspective. The Bible simply sets out to declare that YHWH is the one true God and all others are idols. In fact, Psalms 14:1 says, "The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'" However, the obvious flaw in this argument is that if you don't know if there's a God, then the Bible may not be authoritative. Let's move on to the next argument

Nature says there's a God. The complexity of the natural world and the vastness of the universe suggest strongly that something very powerful made them. The fact is that God has declared himself to man in his creation. "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."(Romans 1:2) There are so many different kinds of geography and life that it boggles the mind. Not just differences between horses and dogs, but also all the different kinds of dogs. Also, the utter "bigness" of the universe is staggering. "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."(Psalm 19:1) It's true, some will say that these aren't proofs of God's existence, but I'm not claiming they are. They just strongly suggest it.

Here's a quick example of what I'm talking about: If you took two magnets and put one's positive end next to the other's negative end they'd stick together. But if you put both of the positive ends or negative ends together, they'd repel each other. It's the basic principle that opposite charges attract each other, while like charges repel each other. Now, consider the atom. The atom is made up of 3 subatomic particles: the proton which is positively charged, the electron which is negatively charged, and the neutron which has no charge. The electrons are found flying around the nucleus, and the protons are all crammed together in with the neutrons in the nucleus. What keeps these negatively charged electrons (found in every atom) from collapsing into the positively charged nucleus? For that matter, why aren't the protons all flying apart at the speed of light? Scientists have told us that there must be some force that holds it all together. They call it the Strong Nuclear Force. But don't ask them to explain further, because no one know what the Strong Nuclear Force is or where it comes from. Except God. He declares in Colossians 1:17 that, "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

However, we have seen in the debates over creation vs evolution, global warming, and the Holocaust that even the best evidence in the world can and will be ignored by those who don't want to believe in something. Let's look at the last argument.

I say there's a God. That's not to say that I'm the authority. It's just that our best "evidence" is anecdotal. People telling how God has affected them is far more compelling than stories from thousands of years ago or a thousand sunsets. The fact that every rational person who is honest with themselves at one time or another struggles with the question of God's existence is strong evidence of his existence. Every culture throughout history worldwide has had a concept of a supernatural power greater than themselves. That is because we are designed by God with a "God-shaped hole" in us that can only filled with God. We can try to fill that with the classics (sex, drugs, and money), or even good works, family, education, fun, success, art, or friends. But in the end, they will not satisfy. That's because you can't put a square peg in a round hole; you can't put anything in a God-shaped hole except God and expect it to fit right.

But that's what people have tried to do. They look at the amazing world around them, and confronted with the reality of God, they have chosen not to seek him out, even though he's promised that "You will... find me when you seek me with all your heart."(Jeremiah 29:13). Romans 1:21-23 goes on to say, "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles."

So if "anecdotal evidence" is the best we've got, what are we to do? How do we know there's a God? Well, ask him to show up. Ask him to reveal himself to you. Be patient. Don't give up. He's promised that "you will find me." Have you experienced God? He's waiting to make himself known to you.
